The lands of Basutoland had been annexed by the British, when the chief of Basutoland asked for help against the Dutch settlers of the orange free state.

This was creating tensions now with the British, when one of the Baphuti chiefs sons was arrested for horse stealing, then rescued by his tribe.

The British sent a force to punish the Baphuti.
